What is the district plan review?

The life span of any district plan is up to ten years before it must be reviewed. The current district plan was made operative in 1996 and was one of the first to be prepared under the Resource Management Act.

A lot can happen in ten years - changes in economic climate, governance and legislation, development pressures and new and emerging issues. This review involves checking how well the district plan is working:

- What has changed over the past ten years?
- Does the current district plan address these changes?
- Can the district plan be more effective?

The release of the draft district plan provided an opportunity for the community to see how it is all coming together, before the formal notification of a proposed district plan.

It is important to remember that some parts of the existing district plan work well and only minor amendments are required. However, other chapters require a complete review.

The chapters and maps making up the draft district plan can be viewed in the "Draft District Plan" section. Feedback on the draft can be viewed in the "What do you think?" section of the website.
